Home Energy Makeover Winner:

The Tsihlis Home in Bangor, PA

Holly Tsihlis and her three children live in Bangor, Pennsylvania, in a 2,200 square-foot home built in 1962. With winter around the corner, Holly waslooking for ways to save on her heating oil and electricity bills. She entered the Home Energy Makeover Contest and won. Holly received a home energy assessment provided by UGI HVAC Services, which indicated she could reduce her heating and cooling bills by 30 percent through an insulation and air sealing package. Since receiving the home energy upgrade, Holly has already noticed that her house feels warmer and it is easier to breathe. Her indoor air quality is noticeably improved through the envelope and water management measures completed.

COMPREHENSIVE HOME ASSESSMENT
UGI HVAC Services used diagnostic equipment (blower door, infrared camera, moisture meter) to conduct an initial
home assessment. They found inconsistent and low amounts of attic insulation and no basement insulation.

INSULATION with AIR SEALING
UGI HVAC Services
removed all existing insulation to improve the indoor air quality and to prepare the attic for spray foam insulation. In the process, they found and repaired a leak in the roof. As part of the program, the garage wall adjacent to the living space was insulated and air sealed. Numerous penetrations between the garage and the house were discovered. Rigid board insulation was installed and all gaps were air sealed to prevent air from escaping the building envelope as well as to improve indoor air quality.

Lapolla Industries, Inc. provided the Airtight Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation, which was installed in Holly’s attic by PA Spray Foam Insulation LLC, creating an unvented attic roof system and reducing heat loss in the attic by 93 percent. Airtight Spray Foam Insulation allowed for extensive air sealing of all gaps and holes that were letting heat escape and increased the insulation R-value from 13 to 20. Airtight Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation also was applied to the HVAC distribution system and air handler within the living spac e, which effectively reduced air leakage and improved indoor air quality.

PA Spray Foam Insulation LLC also air sealed Holly’s basement ceiling and rim joist box using Airtight Polyurethane
Spray Foam Insulation provided by Lapolla Industries, Inc. UGI HVAC Services added fiberglass insulation to foam
insulation on the basement ceiling. This increased the R-value and provided fire protection. All exterior doors were
weather stripped by UGI HVAC Services and a new cellar door was constructed, reducing drafts.
